Reply to this e-mail or call 215 659 8424 Speaker: Edwin A. Wetzel, P.E. Subject: "Underground Galvanic and Stray Current Corrosion; Understanding theConditions and Implementing Solutions" Corrosion of underground and ground-connected structures is often caused or accelerated by electric currents caused by connection of dissimilar metals or stray currents. This presentation will discuss several case histories to provide insight into the importance of application of corrosion engineering to large civil projects. The three case histories provide examples of the conditions which should be considered and what problems can occur if they are not. For each case, there will be a discussion of the solutions which could have avoided the additional costs, delays, and litigation. Edwin A. Wetzel, P.E. began his corrosion engineering career in 1978 in Philadelphia, PA as a co-op student for A.V. Smith Engineering Company. In 1983 he earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Drexel University and shortly thereafter earned his Cathodic Protection Specialist certification from NACE. In 1990 he earned his first professional engineering license in California and is currently registered in 8 states with additional registrations pending in Colorado and Arizona. Mr. Wetzel currently operates his own business, Professional Corrosion Service, LLC, a small consulting engineering firm specializing in all aspects of corrosion engineering. His most recent projects include 2nd Avenue Subway design of corrosion control systems in New York, New York, design of corrosion control systems for Dulles Transit Extension in Virginia, Sound Transit QA engineer in Seattle Washington, QA engineer for Charlotte CATS LRT system in North Carolina, QA manager for track and cathodic protection for Valley Metro Rail in Phoenix Arizona, corrosion engineer for multiple power plants for Calpine Corporation and numerous other projects.
