Subject:The Olympus NDT BondMaster: Functionality and Applications

Composite materials have become exceedingly important in today's design and manufacturing of aircraft, marine craft, sporting goods, and automotive industries. Composite materials are defined as two or more homogeneous materials woven or bonded together to form one uniformed material while maintaining separate physical and/or chemical properties. These composite materials such as, carbon reinforced plastics and Nomex honeycomb, lend themselves quite beneficial in structures due to the strength and light weight properties. Over the years, composite structures have improved with technology and are increasing in use. However, quality and reliability of bonded composites has always been a concern. Typically, ultrasonic and acoustic energy is used in order to inspect the integrity of the bond within composites. Nevertheless, not one method of inspection has been successful in testing the vast variety of composite applications. Therefore, the use of ultrasonic energy, acoustic energy, and mechanical impedance analysis, were combined into one instrument forming what is now the OlympusNDT BondMaster. This multi-mode instrument is primarily used for but, not limited to, the detection of delaminations or disbonding, thickness variations, corrosion detection and honeycomb deformation.

Brett M. Davis began his studies of non-destructive testing in 2005 at The Ocean Corporation in Houston, TX. While attending, he became interested in the methods of eddy current and ultrasonic inspection looking toward the future advancements of each. In March of 2006, Brett was presented with the Charles N. Sherlock Scholarship Award by the Greater Houston ASNT section for his ambition and goals within the non-destructive industry. Upon the completion of his education he started within Olympus NDT as a Technical Support Specialist for eddy current array and bond inspection and continues to be a key support for the company. Since then he has obtained certifications and training in eddy current, eddy current array, bond testing, phased array and ultrasonic inspection from Hellier, NDE Associates, Davis NDT and Olympus NDT. He also holds the position of Director-at-large, Constitution and Bylaws and Scholarship Awards chair in the Greater Houston ASNT section. Brett, his wife, Candice and their two children, Greg and Kaydianna currently reside in Houston, TX and spend a tremendous amount of time volunteering within the children's ministry at their church.
